Where Karen Began

A life built by beginning again.

Karen Anastasia Prescod was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago.

At age 20, she moved to the United States. What followed was a life built across places, experiences, and communities — New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut to Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and Florida. Karen learned to begin again more than once, adapting to new environments while building a career and discovering her capacity to lead.

She entered the workforce from the ground up, learning people, responsibility, service, and what it meant to lead while still finding her own way.

Long before the awards, the recognition, or the stages, there was a young woman from Trinidad learning how to navigate a new country, discovering what she was capable of, and becoming a leader one experience at a time.

When the Chamber's Women's Council had been dormant for approximately five years, Karen brought it back, creating new ways for women to connect.

Karen created the annual International Women's Day conference, which ran for five years.
Nonprofit leadership
Led the Chamber's Nonprofit Council from roughly 15–20 attendees to well over 100 in less than three months, while spearheading its transition into the Social Impact Council.

Created and built platforms centered on courage, confidence and self-expression.
2023
The Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce established the Karen Prescod Trailblazer Award.

The Life Behind a Leader

What you see isn't always the whole picture.

For years, people saw Karen leading. But there were chapters of her life that looked very different.

Chronic pain changed Karen's life and, for a period, her independence. Some days, there were visible signs that something was wrong. Other days, Karen could be standing in front of a room, working, speaking or leading — and there was nothing visible to tell anyone what she was living with.

The pain was no less real because no one could see it.

Years later, after her wife, Tracey, transitioned, Karen came to know grief in another form. Different loss. Different grief. The same human reality: what someone is carrying isn't always something you can see.

Karen Today

The work is grounded in the life she has lived.

Today, Karen Anastasia Prescod is a Wisdom Warrior Catalyst, speaker and writer whose work is grounded in decades of leadership and the life she has lived beyond it.

Her work asks leaders to look beyond the first conclusion they make about someone.
